A stem refers to one specific audio element (e.g., vocals, background music, or sound effects) in a multi-track recording. Using separate stems allows editors to manipulate and balance individual components during post-production, leading to a more polished final product. Stems provide more control over the editing process, allowing editors to adjust levels, apply effects, and eliminate background noise or distortion without impacting other audio tracks.

Example: A podcast interview recorded with separate stems for each speaker ensures that adjustments can be made to one speaker’s audio without affecting the other.

Use Case: Stems are crucial for post-production in more complex podcasts, especially those involving multiple hosts or sound effects.

Tools: Multi-track editing software (Reaper, Adobe Audition), collaboration platforms (Google Drive for stem sharing).
